How to choose interior
doors for your home
Interior doors are one of the most important elements of any home — they set the style, provide privacy and affect sound insulation. As joiners with 30+ years of experience making doors to measure, we share everything you need to know before you choose.
Types of interior doors
1. Classic hinged doors
The most common type. They open in one direction (to the left or to the right) and need clear floor space for the swing arc. The best sound insulation and privacy.
2. Sliding doors
They slide along the wall or into it (pocket system). Ideal for small rooms, hallways and walk-in wardrobes. Modern looks, but weaker sound insulation.
3. Double doors
Two leaves that open outwards or inwards. An elegant option for living rooms, dining rooms and more formal spaces.
4. Glazed doors
A timber frame with glass panels. They let light pass between rooms. The glass can be clear, frosted or decorative.
Choosing the material
| Material | Durability | Price | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid wood (oak) | 50+ years | Higher | Premium, warm |
| Solid wood (beech) | 40+ years | Mid to higher | Light, clean |
| MDF (lacquered) | 15-25 years | Mid-range | Smooth, modern |
| Combination | 25-35 years | Mid-range | Solid frame + infill |
How to measure the opening correctly
Before ordering, measuring the opening properly is essential:
- Width: Measure in 3 places (top, middle, bottom) — take the smallest reading
- Height: Measure on the left and the right side — take the smallest reading
- Wall depth: Important for the door frame (jamb) — measure the thickness of the wall
- Allow a clearance: 2-3mm on each side so the door swings freely
